December 15, 2014 – Philippines Government Sources Ground Penetrating Radars from Canadian Company to Address Geological Safety Concerns

The Mines and Geoscience Bureau (MGB) of the Philippines will use Canadian Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) technology to avoid damages related to sinkhole activity. Toronto-based Sensors & Software Inc. won the international tender and will supply 15 pulseEKKO GPR systems, a premium product that allows deep geological imaging to detect sinkholes, cavities and faults.

Many areas in the Philippines are susceptible to the formation of underground sinkholes; injuries, deaths and severe property damage are common when a sinkhole reaches the surface and the ground suddenly collapses.  MGB was seeking a non-destructive technology to locate these geological hazards near existing communities before they become a safety concern.

MGB is also interested in using GPR to survey areas of proposed commercial, industrial and residential development.  Often, geological hazards are not identified until construction begins, resulting in abandonment of the site or costly remediation.  GPR surveys save time and money by pinpointing problem areas before the start of construction. They will also use GPR for other applications such as detecting faults and investigating areas prone to landslides.

The pulseEKKO PRO was the perfect choice because of its industry-leading high-quality data, ease of use, wide range of antenna frequencies, and numerous configurations for deployment in both rough and smooth terrains.
