Sensors & Software Inc. from Radiodetection announces the newest release of the IceMap™ system.

IceMap uses ground penetrating radar (GPR) technology to measure and map the ice thickness across frozen lakes and rivers used as winter roads in northern areas of Canada and the USA.

This latest release now includes:

  • New generation of Network Interface Controller, the NIC-500, for the GPR sensor
  • New, updated power distribution hardware
  • New, updated wireless communication hardware
  • New generation of Toughbook™ laptop running Windows 11
  • Updated IceMap software

The IceMap software now includes capabilities previously found in the IcePicker utility program, specifically, saving IceMap ice thickness data to color-coded Google Earth KMZ files and spreadsheet (CSV) files for import into GIS and CAD software. These additions mean the IceMap software now includes all functionality, including data acquisition, data editing, and multiple report outputs.

Also, new software licensing means it is now easier than ever to purchase additional IceMap licenses for support staff in the office who need to edit IceMap data and generate PDF, KMZ and CSV reports.

IceMap was originally introduced in 2011 after several winters of working closely with the Northwest Territories (Canada) Department of Transportation. Over the last 20 years, GPR technology has completely changed the procedure for building and monitoring ice roads. This includes providing high-density, accurate ice thickness measurements to improve ice weight capacity calculations and safety and helping extend the ice road season as long as safely possible.
