Connecting a GeodeTM GNSS to an RTK Correction Service Provider (NTRIP)

Excerpts from Juniper® Systems Geode GNS3 Receiver User manual for Sensors & Software GPR users

Overview

NTRIP is a useful protocol for precise correction of real-time positioning solutions. The Geode can calculate an RTK Fix/Float position with sub-meter to centimeter-level accuracy. NTRIP services do require an internet or cell data connection (via your mobile device) and usually involve either a free or paid subscription to the service.

A list of RTK service providers for many countries of the world, can be found on the Juniper Systems website here: https://junipersys.com/products/geode (scroll down to “Find an RTK Network”).

If you have access to an NTRIP service, the Geode Connect app will allow you to configure the Geode to use that service.

The Geode Connect app is available for download to your mobile device at the Juniper website (https://junipersys.com/support/geode), the App Store (for Apple® iOS®), or the Google Play™ Store (for Android™ OS).

Connecting to the Geode

    1) Power up the DVL. Configure the DVL to use the Geode receiver, see GNSS Supplied by GPR Manufacturer Section in the manual. The Geode receiver should turn on.
    2) In your phone’s settings menu, go to the Bluetooth® Settings and search for New Devices. The Geode should show up in the available devices, with the name “Geode” followed by the serial number printed on the label on the bottom of the Geode.
    3) Open the Geode Connect app.

If the “g” symbol in top left corner is grey with a strike through it, tap the “g” symbol. Select the appropriate Geode receiver from the list of receivers, there should be a blue Bluetooth symbol indicating the Geode receiver is connected.

The “g” symbol in the top left corner should then be orange.

The next steps vary slightly depending on whether your phone has Apple iOS or Android OS.

In the Geode Connect app, go to More (…) on the bottom bar and then select Receiver Configuration

Scroll to the bottom of the Receiver Configuration screen and select NTRIP Configuration

On the NTRIP Configuration screen, enter the information supplied by your NTRIP service provider, including the caster IP address, port, username, and password.

Note: NTRIP settings are stored in the Geode Connect app, not in the Geode receiver.

To establish an NTRIP connection:

    1. Make sure that the iPhone® or iPad® you are using to host Geode Connect has a data connection.
    2. Enter the identifying information supplied by your NTRIP service provider.
    3. Verify “Send GGA to Caster” is checked. This tells the Geode to send its position to the caster so that the caster can locate the mount points closest to the Geode’s position.

    4. Tap Save.
    5. Tap Download Mount Points.
    6. Tap the drop-down menu in the Mount Points section. This will open a list of ALL mount points in the network. Select one close to your current position (the NTRIP service provider may also advise which mount point to use).
    7. Choose the appropriate mount point.
    8. Tap Save.
    9. Tap Start NTRIP
    10. Go to Successful NTRIP Connection or Troubleshooting below.

Successful NTRIP Connection

When NTRIP is connected and working, the word NTRIP and a closed green plug will appear on the right side of the Home page. Tap this icon to return to the NTRIP configuration screen at any time.

The Geode Connect app MUST remain open on your phone while you use the NTRIP correction service. If the apps closes, corrections are not provided.

When NTRIP is connected, the GNSS quality will be listed as “RTK Float” or “RTK Fixed” under the GPS icon on the GPR data acquisition screen.

To turn off NTRIP, tap the NTRIP icon in the upper right corner to go to the NTRIP Configuration screen. Select Stop NTRIP.

Troubleshooting

Caster Address Error

If, during the NTRIP connection process, you receive this error:

Invalid Caster Address: Caster Address does not resolve to an IP address. This may be due to a poor internet connection or invalid caster address.

Some NTRIP providers provide the Caster Address in a format that the Geode Connect app does not accept. If this happens, users should contact their NTRIP service provider and request an IP address to input into the Caster Address field above.

For example, if the NTRIP service provides a Caster Address in the form “ntrip.correction.xyz” and Geode Connect returns the error message above, then contact the NTRIP service provider to get an IP address; it will be in the form “123.123.123.123”.

No Connection Problem

If NTRIP appears on the home page with an open orange plug, the Geode is still trying to establish a connection to the NTRIP service. The connection might take a while. If the Geode has trouble connecting, try selecting a different mount point or stop and restart the NTRIP correction.
