December 15, 2014 – Canadian Department of National Defense Invests Locally for Land and Ice Runway Structural Analysis Equipment

The Department of National Defense (DND) will use Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) technology to analyze the structural suitability of runways. MREL Group of Companies Limited (MREL) won the tender to supply a cutting edge Canadian made technology to minimize the risk of runway failure during aircraft landing and take-off. Sensors & Software’s Noggin based system will allow for both pavement and ice runway analysis.

Modern aid missions and military operations rely heavily on the use of aircraft. Anytime aircraft are deployed a reliable location to land is required. GPR allows military engineers to examine existing infrastructure before risking a heavy transport plane landing.

“It’s nice when Canadians can work together to supply a premium technology to their Government.” says Sensors & Software’s Director of Business Development Lawrence Rosen.

Aircraft runways can be situated on land or on the thick ice that covers a large portion of Canada’s lakes in the winter. GPR can look beneath the surface and see locations where the runway could give way and dangerous potholes form. In addition, this technology will allow for the thickness of ice runways to be examined at tactical speeds. The Noggin based system will prove to be an effective tool at mitigating some of the risk involved with use of aircraft in the DND.

“While MREL provides integrated solutions to an international client base, it is always most gratifying to win competitive tenders here at home – we’re thankful for the opportunity and, of course, for this win.” says Bill Bauer, President and COO of MREL.
