Senior Accountant

Job Summary

The Senior Accountant role is supported by Director, Corporate Services and is responsible to provide accurate financial and budgetary information and advice.  This role is responsible for the execution of Sensors & Software’s Authority Matrix, corporate accounting functions, and overseeing & ensuring the accurate & periodic recording of accounting transactions, including all receipts and payments.

Key Responsibilities

Planning & Financial Reporting

  • Responsible for the full accounting and financial reporting cycle.
  • Ensures that timely, accurate financial and budgetary information and advice are available.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements, including budget & forecast to year end.
  • Prepare and monitor variance analysis with department managers.
  • Develop and advise other management team members on their budgets and budget tracking.
  • Coordinate preparation of annual operating and capital budgets and ensure they are linked to/flow from the organization’s annual operating plan.
  • Develop key performance indicators to measure financial and business performance.
  • Assessing current accounting operations and offering recommendations for improvement for current processes or implementing new processes.

Accounting & Compliance

  • Responsible for all accounting operations including billing, A/P, A/R, GL reconciliation, Cost Accounting, Inventory Accounting and Revenue/COGS Recognition.
  • Coordinate preparation of the fiscal budget and financial forecasts and report variances on a monthly basis.
  • Establish, document and maintain financial mechanisms to capture appropriate data.
  • Provide accurate financial information on the status of the organization’s finances to support decision making.
  • Conduct financial and business analyses to support the organization or to determine the need for new or revised controls.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual GL reconciliation to budget and forecast expenditures.
  • Research and troubleshoot technical accounting issues for compliance.
  • Submit Whitebook report to senior management for review within 10 days of last day of the previous month.
  • Prepare and maintain cash flow forecast and provide for review as part of Whitebook submission.
  • Coordinate & prepare documentation requested by External Auditors for annual audit.
  • Lead annual SR&ED filing – financial report preparation & coordinating the word document with the R&D Team.
  • Monitor authority matrix adherence to ERP process control and update senior management of any discrepancies and/or updates required.
  • Comply with provincial/federal reporting requirements, tax filings, and other statutory reports as required.
  • Liaises with external auditors and ensures all necessary information is correct and available to them.
  • Responsible for the month and year-end close processes.
  • Conduct risk assessment and assist with developing/improving risk management strategies.

Key Accountabilities

  • Oversee Finance operations, including transaction processing, reconciliations, government filings, accounting policies & procedures.
  • Timely payment and receipt of AP and AR.
  • Provincial/federal reports, tax filings, and other statutory reports are filed in a timely manner.
  • Preparation of annual budget and forecasts and reporting actuals vs budget periodically.
  • Ensure periodic financial statements, including year-end, are prepared in a timely manner.
  • Accurate and timely information flow with external auditors for annual reviews or CRA audits, as required.
  • Set long-term and short-term department goals & initiatives and mentor the team in achieving set targets.
  • Supervise, train and retain skilled Finance Team.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years’ proven working experience in a senior financial role.
  • Bachelors’ degree in Accounting.
  • CPA or CMA designation.
  • Thorough knowledge of accounting principles and procedures.
  • Exceptional verbal, written and interpersonal skills.

Working Conditions

  • Primarily in an office environment; however, some travel may be expected.
  • Periodic weekend or evening work is expected.
