Application Specialist

Job Summary:

Supported by the R&D Application Team Lead, the R&D Application Specialist is responsible for testing and documentation of the Hardware and Software developed by the R&D department. They support all internal and external S&S customers by providing technical and application-focused knowledge. They act as the voice of the customer when developing/testing new features and products.


Key Responsibilities:

Project Execution:

  • Preparing hardware and software testing plans, collecting data and documenting test results for products in development or existing products;
  • Support new product development by providing user experience suggestions;
  • Understand the project execution process.


Technical Knowledge:

  • Competency in the use of core company products;
  • Work with the Technical Support team and Training Dept to address customer inquiries and issues relating to core company products;
  • Support the needs of all departments by providing technical expertise for core company products.

Applications Knowledge:

  • Conduct short scientific focused field surveys using standard methodologies at local test sites;
  • Support the development of custom GPR solutions using existing hardware and software components;
  • Combine technical and application knowledge to determine appropriate GPR equipment and optimal settings for specific application types involving S&S GPR core systems;
  • Understand the major areas of product use which we commonly refer to as the Big 8.



  • Competency in the use of NETSUITE for common operations (timesheets, Case editing issue reporting);
  • Reviewing Corporate Policies (Employee Handbook & Health and Safety Policy manual);
  • Other temporary duties as assigned.



Global Responsibilities:

  • Understand your departmental or area initiatives as defined in the operating plan and help execute these initiatives;
  • All areas of the company require business coverage from 830am to 500pm and while time is flexible you need to do your part to ensure that area coverage is maintained;
  • Understand that you work in a small to medium-sized business and that being a member of such an organization requires that you may from time to time have to pitch in and carry out work that is not part of your normal responsibilities; ‘no task is too small and no challenge too big if everyone pitches in’.


Key Accountabilities:

  • Competency in the use of S&S GPR Core Systems to provide technical support to internal and external customers;
  • Identify and log all major operational issues with release candidate software for S&S GPR core systems;
  • Timely completion of individual tasks and team-based projects, adjusting the scope of work as needed;
  • Adherence to R&D testing & documentation procedures.

  • Maintenance of confidentiality in respect to all matters and understand what sensitive information means.


Skills & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in science, engineering or other related discipline;
  • Technical writing experience;
  • Strong verbal communication skills;
  • Strong computer skills required for application software testing, report generation and data analysis;
  • Experience collecting scientific data in a field environment;
  • Strong problem solving and critical thinking skills;
  • Experience with 3rd party software packages an asset: MS-Office, Windows OS, Linux OS, Corporate ERP Systems, Python.
